Carbon Reduction Plan

Commitment to Achieving Net Zero

Doc-works Limited is committed to achieving Net Zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 at the latest, in line with UK Government requirements and Procurement Policy Note PPN 006.

In addition to this formal commitment, Doc-works has set an internal ambition to achieve Net Zero earlier, with a working target of 2030, where this remains practical and achievable. This reflects the low-carbon nature of our business, our ISO 14001 Environmental Management System, our use of electric vehicles, our hybrid working model, and our continued move towards lower-carbon digital infrastructure.

Our priority is to reduce emissions wherever possible through direct operational changes before considering the use of verified carbon offsetting or carbon removal for any residual emissions that cannot reasonably be eliminated.

About Doc-works

Doc-works is a UK-based software and digital services supplier providing secure digital solutions to the NHS, ambulance services, local authorities and other public sector and healthcare organisations.

As a software and digital services business, Doc-works has a relatively low direct operational carbon footprint. The company does not manufacture physical products and does not operate large logistics, warehousing or distribution activities. Its main emissions relate to purchased electricity, technology infrastructure, data-centre services, employee travel, homeworking, commuting and supplier activity.

Doc-works’ wider social value approach is based on responsible business, environmental management, fair working practices, apprenticeships and skills development, staff wellbeing, inclusion, secure digital transformation and support for better public services.

Environmental Management System

Doc-works maintains an Environmental Management System that satisfies the requirements of ISO 14001:2015.

Control of emissions is addressed through Doc-works’ environmental management processes, including consideration of energy use by employees, office activity, IT equipment, hosting infrastructure and supplier arrangements.

Doc-works uses modern computer and server equipment, manages lighting and air conditioning carefully, and continues to review opportunities to reduce energy use and environmental impact.

Alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals

Doc-works’ environmental and social value approach aligns with selected United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Doc-works is not currently a signatory of the UN Global Compact, but the company uses relevant UN Sustainable Development Goals as a helpful framework for describing its environmental, social value and responsible business activity.

Baseline Emissions Footprint

Baseline emissions are a record of the greenhouse gases produced in a previous year and are the reference point against which future emissions reductions can be measured.

Doc-works has selected 2024 as its baseline year.

The organisational boundary for this Carbon Reduction Plan is the United Kingdom, using an operational control approach.

Scope 1 Baseline Emissions

Scope 1 emissions are reported as 0.00 tCO₂e.

Doc-works does not use gas heating and does not operate petrol or diesel company vehicles. Where company vehicles are used, these are electric, which produce no direct tailpipe emissions.

Any electricity associated with electric vehicle charging is considered within Scope 2 Scope 2 or Scope 3 depending on the charging location and the level of Doc-works' operational control over the electricity used.

Scope 2 Baseline Emissions

Scope 2 emissions are reported using the location-based method, based on UK grid electricity factors.

Scope 2 emissions include electricity used in Doc-works’ directly controlled office operations, including lighting, air conditioning and office IT equipment.

Scope 2 may also include electric vehicle charging where the electricity is purchased or controlled directly by Doc-works.

Scope 3 Baseline Emissions

Doc-works has assessed the relevant Scope 3 emissions categories for its operations in line with the Carbon Reduction Plan reporting approach used for public procurement.

As a software and digital services provider, Doc-works does not operate a material physical supply chain for the transportation of goods. The most relevant Scope 3 emissions arise from staff commuting, homeworking, limited business travel, operational waste, and third-party services used to support delivery of digital services.

Scope 3 Category Applicability to Doc-works Current Position
Upstream transportation and distribution Low / not material Doc-works does not routinely purchase or distribute physical goods at scale. Any minor upstream delivery activity is considered immaterial within the current footprint.
Waste generated in operations Relevant but low Office waste is limited due to the nature of Doc-works’ digital operations. Doc-works continues to reduce paper use, recycle where possible and minimise physical waste.
Business travel Relevant Business travel is limited and is reduced through remote meetings, hybrid working and use of electric vehicles where practical.
Employee commuting Relevant Employee commuting and homeworking emissions are included within the Scope 3 assessment. Hybrid working helps reduce commuting emissions while maintaining operational flexibility.
Downstream transportation and distribution Low / not material Doc-works provides digital software services and does not routinely transport or distribute physical products to customers. This category is therefore considered not material.

For the 2024 baseline year, estimated Scope 3 emissions were 32.50 tCO₂e.

Doc-works will continue to improve the granularity of its Scope 3 reporting over time, including separating employee commuting, homeworking, business travel and waste into individual reporting lines where sufficient data is available.

Current Emissions Reporting

The current reporting year is 2025.

Emissions Scope Tonnes CO₂e
Scope 10.0
Scope 24.0
Scope 312
Total16.0

Doc-works’ total reported emissions have reduced from 37.00 tCO₂e in the 2024 baseline year to 16.00 tCO₂e in the 2025 reporting year.

This represents an estimated reduction of 21.00 tCO₂e, or approximately 57%, against the baseline year.

Explanation of Emissions Reduction

The largest reduction has been achieved in Scope 3 emissions, primarily through changes to Doc-works’ hosting, colocation and technology infrastructure arrangements.

During the reporting period, Doc-works refreshed and migrated its server infrastructure into UK data-centre facilities.

Doc-works uses its own server equipment within these facilities, with the data-centre provider supplying colocation space, physical infrastructure, power, cooling, connectivity and environmental controls.

The facilities used by Doc-works are stated by the provider as using efficient infrastructure and electricity from 100% renewable sources. This supports a lower-carbon infrastructure model compared with the previous baseline position.

Based on Doc-works’ current assessment, the estimated reduction associated with the server refresh, infrastructure consolidation and data-centre change is approximately 18.5 tCO₂e against the 2024 baseline. This is an estimated reduction based on the best available data and assumptions at the time of publication and will be reviewed annually as supplier data and internal measurement processes improve.

Further reductions have been achieved through lower travel-related emissions, efficient working practices, use of electric vehicles, continued hybrid and remote working where appropriate, and ongoing review of operational energy use.

Emissions Reduction Targets

Doc-works is committed to achieving Net Zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 at the latest.

Doc-works has also set an internal ambition to achieve Net Zero by 2030, where this remains practical and achievable.

Target Year Target Reduction Against 2024 Baseline Target Emissions
2025 57% reduction achieved 16.00 tCO₂e
2030 Internal ambition to reach Net Zero, subject to practical delivery and treatment of residual emissions 0–5 tCO₂e before any verified offsetting or removals

Scope 3 Categories Not Currently Reported or Not Applicable

Doc-works is primarily a UK-based software and digital services supplier. Some Scope 3 categories are not considered applicable or material to the company’s current business model.

Doc-works does not manufacture, distribute or sell physical products at scale. As a result, the following categories are not currently considered material or applicable:

  • downstream transportation and distribution of physical products;
  • processing of sold products;
  • use of sold physical products;
  • end-of-life treatment of sold physical products;
  • franchises;
  • investments.

Where a Scope 3 category may be relevant but data quality is still developing, Doc-works will continue to improve its measurement and reporting approach through supplier engagement and annual review.

Methodology and Data Quality

Emissions have been calculated using the best data available to Doc-works at the time of publication.

Scope 1 emissions are based on the absence of direct fossil-fuel use within Doc-works’ operational control.

Scope 2 emissions are reported using the location-based method for purchased electricity.

Scope 3 emissions are based on the categories currently assessed as most relevant and material to Doc-works’ operations, including homeworking, commuting, business travel where applicable, offsite data-centre and infrastructure-related emissions, electric vehicle charging where not already included in Scope 2, waste, and supplier activity where data is available.

The estimated reduction associated with hosting, colocation and technology infrastructure reflects the move to refreshed Doc-works-owned server equipment located within UK data-centre facilities using electricity stated by the provider as being from 100% renewable sources. This figure is based on the best available information at the time of publication and may be refined in future reporting as more detailed supplier-specific emissions data becomes available.

Doc-works recognises that Scope 3 emissions reporting will continue to mature over time. The company will review the completeness, accuracy and methodology of its emissions reporting annually.

Review and Publication

This Carbon Reduction Plan will be reviewed and updated annually to reflect changes in Doc-works’ organisational structure, emissions profile, methodology, business activity and carbon reduction measures.

Doc-works will aim to review and update the Carbon Reduction Plan within six months of the company’s financial year-end, using the best available data for the relevant reporting period.

The latest version of this Carbon Reduction Plan will be published on the Doc-works Limited website. Previous versions may be retained where appropriate to demonstrate progress over time.
